HOW TO CLEAN AND STORE YOUR WEDDING DRESS

Cleaning and storing your wedding dress is serious business. In order for your wedding dress to remain in-tact, you should practice proper cleaning and storage of your dress. This should be done as soon as possible after your big day so that your dress will be clean, spot-free, and will look just as good as the day you were married. Here, we will let you know who can help with this process, where to store your dress, and what precautions to take.

Who can Help?

Do not attempt to clean your dress yourself using water. This can result in the dress becoming stained or misshapen. This is especially true if you have a vintage wedding dress. Instead, seek out the help of either an experienced dry cleaner or an experienced textile conservator. Ask them to perform a spot-test, if possible, as well as testing out sequins, beads, and buttons for possible damage. Conservators can tell you what the treatment cost is beforehand. If you work with a dry cleaner, be sure to provide a padded hanger, and remove blue tissue paper from your dress if they use it so it will no stain.

Where to Store Your Dress

Store your dress in a closet within the living area of your home. Extreme temperature, dampness, possible rust, mold, and mildew in areas like attics and basements can ruin it. Some wedding dresses without heavy or full skirts can safely be hung on a padded hanger. Others should be packed in an acid-free box lined with white plain tissue paper that is also acid-free. Pack the folds of the dress carefully with this same paper. Do not store your dress in a cedar box. Although boxing is best, the gases from cedar wood can actually harm it.

Watch Out for Bugs!

Lastly, be sure that bugs cannot infest your dress. Moss, beetles, and silverfish may all damage the very fine materials most wedding dresses are made of. You will notice small holes of damage overtime if your dress has been infested. Avoid using mothballs, as this can make your dress smell bad, and will not do much to hinder bugs. Put your dress somewhere that is clean, dry, and be sure that the box is sealed and without a window so that this does not happen to you. Plastic may result in humidity damage and staining.
