WEDDING DRESS PRESERVATION:
YOUR QUICK GUIDE

Why Go For Preservation?: Your Quick Guide

Wedding gown preservation is what you need if you want to keep your gown for many years. This is especially important to have done if you want a keepsake from your great day, want to sell your dress, plan on making your dress an heirloom, or wish to make a christening gown of baby bed clothes at a later date with the fabric. Expect the total cost of this service to be a few hundred dollars, in most cases. Here, we will give you all the information you need about preservation.

What is it?

Basically, wedding gown preservation is done by a preservation company or local dry cleaner. This process includes inspection, cleaning, and putting the gown into an archival box which may or may not be sealed. If using a local dry cleaner, go directly to them. If using a company you ship the dress to, they normally provide packing materials and cover shipping. Some services include a warranty. Taking this step will insure that your dress does not stain, yellow, or become misshapen. After you get it back, be sure to store your dress in its box flat in a closet in your living area.

Time is of the Essence

When thinking about dress preservation, do not worry about it until after the wedding. Feel free to do anything on your wedding day, as most companies that perform this service have seen it all. At most, wait about 6 weeks to have this service done. Even if you wait, though, some companies can still preserve a dress up that is years old. While you wait, store it somewhere where light cannot get to it, flat. Do not hang your dress. And do not put it in a plastic garment bag, as it may stain.

Important Questions

Considering a dress preservation company? Ask them what chemicals they use, what their process is, and if they offer any kind of warranty. Feel free to ask for referrals and about professional experience, as well. Be sure to ask about how long the service will take (typically a few weeks of time). If you want to preserve your veil, garter, purse, or shoes, be sure to ask about that, as well. IF the cleaner does not offer a warranty, says they will use perc as a cleaner (perchloroethylene), or does not offer a fair price, go elsewhere.
